Cybernetic Urbanism
Skyscraper and bridge construction require complex interdisciplinary Systems Engineering begging the question: why do some architects rely on old-fashioned tools to make compicated designs today? In 1999, LaGess and McNamara began to theorize urban design as controlled by cybernetic systems relying on web-based design tools: the internet as the crucial urban design machine. Lord Foster’s Partner and Head of Computing, Hugh Whitehead, hosted our Harvard Studio in 2001 and introduced a range of generative software and database tools for architects which our students tested.
