voxel

(By analogy with 'pixel') Volume element.

The smallest distinguishable box-shaped part of a three-dimensional space. A particular voxel will be identified by the x, y and z coordinates of one of its eight corners, or perhaps its center (the term is used in three dimensional modelling). Most GIS and GIS queries are based on flat 2D maps. As a three dimensional matrix, the voxel CAAD and GIS model suggests the future of database queries in which all elements of a system can be tracked by their centroids anywhere in space. We expect to navigate and construct files in all dimensions and to link databases to the 3D models.
